Winter Passing Winter Passing R
Reese Holden (Deschanel) is a struggling actress, living in New York City just trying to get by. She gets an offer from a publishing company to publish letters that her father wrote to her mother. Her father is a well known author, and her mother has recently passed away. Reese decided to return home after she is offered 100,000 dollars for the letters. Upon returning home she realizes that her father has let himself go, and he is now living with a former student and a want to be musician.

Reese Holden: I just can't believe this is the same man who told his six-year-old daughter that Christmas was a Republican capitalistic conspiracy created by the Hallmark Corporation and that, if Jesus were alive today he'd be down in Nicaragua rallying the Sandinistas. Grace Away.

Reese has just returned home and nothing is what it used to be, not that she really enjoyed the way things used to be as a child. She hasn?t had any contact with her parents in almost seven years and she is bribed into going back to visit her father. She quickly sees that he has changed and she begins to question these changes.

Zooey Deschanel plays the role of Reese perfectly, Reese is struggling, and I liked the early 20 minutes or so of a glimpse into her New York life before she heads home. New York city is a wonderful place as many of us know, such a diversified city with many things to do, but as we see with Reese life can get in the way of glamour.

I originally thought there would be a little more humour to this film, but as it progressed I was really impressed with the road they took, allowing lonely people to be the center of a lonely world, where they relied on each other to get through the tough times. Set against a cold back drop the setting actually sets the mood for the way the people felt, so cold and isolated from the rest of the world.

Ed Harris wasn?t used to his full potential, yes I know the film centered around Reese and her world and how she felt about the ever changing world in which she is a part of, but Harris?s character had many different aspects they could have dove full force into, instead they took the high road so to speak and left us with a simple character. We all know what drove to this point in his life, but perhaps a few flashback scenes set with a nice back and white back tone could have been the key to an emotionally gripping film

I am not going to complain about the finished product, I really liked what I saw, and how the actors were convincing, but I think there was so much more to these peoples pain that the failed to explore. Pain is painful, and in these people you could feel their pain, but perhaps I was hoping for visuals of their pain. People might see that as odd, and the way I worded it could seem odd, but I mean that leaving the pain to our imagination doesn?t .
Will Farrell was miscast, and as much as I like this guy, I couldn?t feel his need to do a dramatic role for a change. It was like the script writer tried to play for comedic dramatics which does not play with the rest of the film at all. Perhaps I am just used to Will Farrell doing what he does best, which is laugh out loud over the top comedy and him playing a simple down to earth man just wasn?t the piece that fit to complete the films puzzle.

As an entire film though, and having had time to process this film and what it all means, I have to admit that nothing else matters in this film other then Reese Holden and what her character is trying to accomplish, the story could be predictable, the settings dreary and cold, the dialogue a bit misguided, but all in all Reese struggled with her morals, and her deciding what was right and what was wrong. She came into herself, and as clichéd as that can be seen, everyone must do that. And Zooey nailed it. In the end Reese and Don are the two characters that shaped the film from start to finish, and even struggling actress living in NYC Reese was a product of how she grew up. So I guess what I am saying is as long as Ed Harris and Zooey Deschanel captured what seemed to be realistic emotions then this film is good, but it went beyond that, as Don and Reese grow to understand one another.
Whiteout Whiteout R
Carrie Stetko is a Us Marshall working in Antarctica. Winter is fast approaching and they need to start getting people out of there. But just as things begin to shut down for the winter a body is found, leading Carrie on the first murder investigation in Antarctica?s history. She has help from Robert Pryce (Macht) and Delfy (Short) as she rushes to solve the mystery so that she won?t be stranded on the continent with the killer.

Kate Beckinsale is a good actress. She has taken on Underworld, and appeared in films such as Winged Creatures(Fragments) and The Aviator. Yet in this film she takes on an average starring role and doesn?t really do much with it. Here I was expecting Kate to become the next big leading lady and based upon this performance I just don?t see that happening. She can lead action adventure movies because there is something to bail out her acting. I like Kate, I liked her in supporting roles. I was hoping to like this film and enjoy her performance but that just didn?t happen. I do think with an exceptional script and perhaps a better director Kate can become a starring actress in any film she chooses. I just don?t think that is going to happen right now. She was some work to do, and if she wants to prove herself, she should take on more action less dramas, and work herself into dramatic roles. Just some friendly advice, because I want to see her do well.

As far as the story, it didn?t play out the way I hoped, it become a drag and a mess of facts. The characters took too long to figure it out; they couldn?t seem to add 2 and 2 together to get 4. It was mindless, and the killings were just way over the top. It was a character plot, with random brutal murders. I don?t see that too much. It was painful to watch the parading around of a killer on a remote landscape. Just constantly search the grounds and you would have had him. It does not seem that tough of a task. I know Carrie is the lone Marshall but still if those people she knew would have helped it could have been prevented, because once they reveal who it is it just makes the whole film a worthless experience. A twist alien invasion ending would have been better and films with aliens attached to them are movies I don?t usually like.

They played on the clichés. Clearly Hollywood tried for an original idea for a film, oh wait this film was based on a graphic novel. I actually thought Hollywood created at least an original concept. I guess I thought wrong. Oh well this film just did not play out like I expected it too. And the random swearing from the middle point on was a bit odd. Average normal dialogue from the start and then boom swear fest. I don?t get that, I know people swear a lot in real life, but then add it right from the beginning. I don?t care about swearing a film, just don?t it add it mid way. Or don?t add one or two for dramatic purposes. Use it throughout or just leave it out.

I just never really got interested in the film, and I read everywhere about Kate?s shower scene being the best part. Am I the only guy on the planet who finds this to be a ridiculous statement. Yes he is a beautiful woman, but no need to make her sound like an object of your affection guys. Get life and watch films for the right reasons. Hearing that this scene was the only thing you enjoyed just makes me angry. Oh and to finish my rant, the shower scene added nothing to the movie, and the director knew this. He just wanted to keep the interest of the male audience. I hate directors that do this. A good sex scene that actually furthers an on screen relationship or somehow changes the grand scheme of the plot it ok. But random non plot changing shower scenes just to show your female lead half naked are pointless. Also this doesn?t speak volumes for the screen writers either. Were they playing out some odd fantasy? Who knows? Create affective scenes, don?t write pointless scenes. That?s all for now, and I have expressed my feelings on this issue before. This is not the first time and being that Hollywood does this regularly I don?t think this will be the last time I rant on this.

A bad film now that I think about. Just fails to impress. Good luck to the cast in whatever they choose to do next, hopefully is actually showcases your talents.

The Dark Knight The Dark Knight PG-13
The Dark Knight begins with Batman working with Jim Gordon(Oldman) who is the cop willing to do what it takes to end crime in Gotham City. With the help of Harvey Dent( Eckhart) and Rachel Dawes (Gyllenhaal) they have to unite and figure out what is right to stop the new criminal of Gotham City simply known as the Joker(Ledger). The joker is phycopathic and plays on the emotions and it doesnt it for kicks, not really having a motive. The Late Heath Ledger is flawless. Everything and anything good that has been said about his portrayal is accurate. Heath delivers his lines, and it goves you chills when he says what he says. Heath's portrayal of the Joker is far more sinical then anyother villian I have seen to date. He is willing to do anything, just to prove his point, just to get the thrill of explosions and killing. Heath Ledger will always be remembered. Heath deserves the posthumous oscar award. He deserves any and all praise willing to be given. Flawless portrayal. It left me speachless for a good half an hour after I watched it. Gary Oldman and Christian Bale do such a wonderful job playing Batman and Gordon. Batman is different this time around.Gordon is willing to take down thw criminals but Batman isnt so sure that they can take down the Joker. The Special affects are rocking. The Story is perfect, The acting is flawless. This is the best comic book adaption I have ever scene. Chris and Jonathon Nolan wrote a script that will never be forgotten. This film is stand alone when you think of comic book adaptions. This is the Batman we were all waiting to see. This is the Joker that we have come to wish for. This is the movie that will end up being the best of 08. This movie will go down in history. Its more then just Batman, its the Joker, its acting at its finest, its A struggle of knowing what is right and what is wrong. Its characters developed to the point where it almost seems real. R.I.P Heath Ledger 1979-2008.
