North of Normal
audience Reviews
, 81% Audience Score- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis Mother-Daughter film was beautifully shot and brilliantly acted. The narrative structure was well thought out, bringing together pivotal moments in the tough life of a girl drifting from place to place. Her Mother is completely incapable of parenting, exposing her daughter to instability and an assortment of dysfunction men. Yet, the Mother does love her daughter in her own quirky mixed up way. The final scenes are riveting and heart breaking. It is sad that this small Canadian film will not have a wider audience. It’s an original! It’s has a few missteps but is a fascinating story. I was fortunate to see this film and hear a brief talk from the woman who this Memoir is based. Again, Too bad more people won’t see it.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsGreat coming of age story. Leaves me curious for how the rest of their lives turned out. I may have to check out the book!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsFrequently touching but largely forgettable story about a girl figuring stuff out.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThe movie is captivating and interesting. It feels authentic. I very much enjoyed how scenes flowed easily from past to present to past and how roles were often reversed or questioned.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsThis was such an engaging movie. I couldn't believe how much smarter even the young Cea was than the useless Mom. I felt so sorry for Cea. It's worth the watch.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA poetic movie about the life in the wild, and the challenge of growing up. Robert Carlyle nailed his role also this time. Sadly this film is hard to find, I luckily found it on a airplane. Worth watching.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsFascinating, heartbreaking and beautifully written and acted.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAn interesting movie, Good acting, strong performance. Somewhat disturbing story. The Ending was a let down, as this movie is based on a true story, the movie closes on the girl taking a flight... The true story, her becoming a fairly successful model despite her upbringing, I dont know why they would not have included the smallest piece of that, to give the story a stronger ending... I do not feel the ending did the film justice. If you watch it, do uour own research to find some happy closure.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsAs a fan of the book, I was eager to watch the movie. The movie missed out on a lot of the book and jumped around way too much. I watched it with someone who hadn't read the book and he had a very difficult time following the very jumpy timeline.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsAmazing memoir of Cea Sunshine growing up in a crazy unstable world successfully, I can only hope she will have a part two film to complete the next journey of her story in her 2017 memoir Nearly Normal.
