Nice little indie on the Icelandic frontier 3.4

Fast forwarded the last painful thirty minutes. Not sure what the movie message was but it doesn't matter just plain boring.

The 2018 film SPELL is pretty low key but manages to be about as prosaic and naturalistic as possible while also being fantastic. It uses its small budget creatively to make the film look natural rather than cheap. The story stays interesting with every scene as well, almost by using criticism of American culture to expect something grand and overblown, instead of just enjoying nature and history. Plus, I loved how they used the followers of Loftur sparingly so we know what they're all about without have to overexplain them. This isn't as precisely controlled of a narrative as 2016's A Dark Song and doesn't have as spectacular of an ending but it does manage to make magic intriguing as that film.

A differenza dei soliti Film dell'orrore, (incentrati su mostri), si presenta come un viaggio spirituale del protagonista: spiritualità, magia, immaginazione, follia, sogno, e delirio si intrecciano spesso, portando lo spettatore a metterci anche del suo per la risoluzione della trama del film (altro fattore che ci porta non solo ad assistere a questo viaggio, ma a parteciparvi insieme al protagonista); lasciando alla fine, non la paura ma un senso di instabilità e inquietudine (Anche la fotografia molto cupa, insieme a quella regia molto "islandese" contribuiscono in quella direzione). Non un capolavoro, ma, a mio giudizio, uno di quei film da vedere assolutamente.

It's cool to see Barak Hardley in a more serious lead role., considering all I've ever seen him in are supporting comedic roles. This movie surpassed my expectations.

I love this flick. Weird and funny, beautifully shot and genuinely moving. Highly recommend!
